What to do if your AC unit has stopped cooling

If your AC unit is no longer cooling, try these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check the Thermostat: Ensure that the thermostat is set to a temperature lower than the current room temperature and is set to cool mode, not heat or off.

2. Change the Air Filters: Locate the filters in your AC system and check when they were last changed. Filters should ideally be replaced every 3 months to maintain optimal airflow.

3. Inspect for Water Pooling: Check around the furnace unit for any signs of water pooling on the floor. If you notice water, switch the unit from cool to off at the thermostat and set the fan to ON or continuous. This will allow the coil to thaw out before the technician arrives. Call for professional service at this point to have your refrigerant pressures checked.

4. Check the Outside AC Unit: Locate the outdoor AC condenser unit and see if the fan is running. If the fan is not running, go to the breaker box and locate the breaker for the AC unit. If it has tripped, you can attempt to reset it. However, if the breaker immediately trips again, do not attempt to reset it. This indicates a direct short in the system, and it requires a technician to safely diagnose the issue.

5. Inspect the Condenser Coil: Examine the outside of the AC condenser coil to see if it is clogged with debris. Do not spray water on the unit while it is running, as it operates on high voltage. If the coil is clogged, inform the technician before their arrival so they can conduct an emergency coil cleaning. If the coil is accessible and you want to clean it yourself, use a paintbrush to gently remove any large debris. However, it is still recommended to have a professional perform a thorough cleaning to remove fine dust that has built up inside the coil. Never use high-pressure water to clean the coil, as it can cause damage. It is highly recommended to have a professional handle any work on your HVAC system.
